So tinypinkmouse linked some of her podfics of my stories to my originals on A03, including some she did over the summer--and which I'd had no clue even existed! This post at amplificathon includes links to podfics (and, of course, my original texts) for "Four Times Tony Stark Met Erik Lenscherr (And One Time He Didn't)" (Iron Man/XMM, Tony & Erik, minor het pairings), "Master and Commander" (Sarah Connor Chronicles, John/Allison), and "The Myrrh-Bearer's Gospel" (Biblefic, Mary Magdalene/Joanna). I'm especially excited about that last one, because I don't even know how to describe it, but there's something about tinypinkmouse's reading that just works for me (I think part of it is the congruence of her non-American accent with the non-American characters), and I'm not ashamed to admit that I choked up at a couple places as I listened to the podfic.

Plus she recorded Road to Emmaus (Firefly, Book, gen), which I did know about before, but can't remember if I mentioned in this journal or not.

And which reminds me that eosrose also recorded a couple of my stories over the past year, and even though I did know about those, looking over my recent entries I never pimped them here. So let me point out that she recorded Fatherhood (Parent Trap, Nick, gen) and Last Day on Earth (Ender's Game, Val & Peter, gen).

Yuletide is Here, Happiness and Cheer

Yuletide is upon us! I received Lead Me on a Merry Chase, a Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? fic which pairs Player and Carmen. While I was originally thinking of Carmen as an A.I., my Yulewriter had the interesting idea of re-considering the cartoon as more of a MMORPG with Carmen being played by another human--out there somewhere. Plus, the fic takes the chance to do some interesting things with disability, since we never actually see Player walk (or do anything other than sit in front of a computer, really). But most importantly, the fic captures that flirtiness between Player and Carmen which interested me in the pairing in the first place and spin it out into a full femslash relationship.

I wrote two stories of larger than 1,000 words. It's possible I might still write some treats before Madness closes, but at this point I'm beginning to doubt it.

If anyone is interested in guessing which stories I wrote, comments are screened. I may or may not provide prizes to those who correctly guess. If you leave a comment which is not a guess, I'll unscreen it immediately unless you specifically tell me not to.

Thank you for signing up to write a story for me! You're one of 4 people who offered to write for Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? and/or one of [x] people who offered to write for The ILLUMINATUS! Trilogy , and I love you for that alone. It looks like I was the only one to offer for Tart, sadly, but I'll leave that part of my letter in too in case you decide you'd like to give that a try, or you are a pinch hitter or a treats writer. (The movie's available for free on Hulu, and is embedded below.)

If you check out my userinfo, you'll find a 'thon policy which implores that you be true first and foremost to the prompt and your muse, and to consider whether I'd like a story as, at most, a secondary concern. I stand by that, but I also recognize there is a sense that a yuletidestory is explicitly a gift in a way which most 'thon fics aren't, so feel free to surf through this journal to get a feel for me, and here's a little bit more, if you are interested, to help you understand how I relate to the specific texts and characters in the fandoms I've requested and what I might like. OTOH, don't be intimitated; this letter might demonstrate that I've thought long and hard about why I want what I want, ~~because I'm full of myself and like to navel-gaze~~ so you can get a feel for my tastes, but the specifics of what I'd like are intentionally vague even in my own mind.

As you can probably tell from my requests, I'm interested in female characters--in particular, adolescent female characters with agency--and the relationships between them. I talk more about my love of radically autonomous young female characters in this post from 2006 and provide more examples of the specific dynamic I like and why I think it rings for me; I go on to talk about incest, but since that's not relevant for any of my requests this year you can feel free to ignore that part.

Beyond that, I like to think I'm easy to write for. I have few squicks--I'm fine with character death, BDSM, mpreg, dubcon, noncon, chan, incest--you name it, I'm probably okay with it. Just please no bashing of my favorite characters. Happy, uplifting fics are good, but so are soul-crushingly depressing ones so long as the pairings and characters get to be awesome. Ambivalent fics where we're not sure whether we should cheer or cry are probably best of all. If I didn't like existentialism and pseudo-nihilism in my fic, I wouldn't be a Joss Whedon fan.

Yuletide Nominations

It occurs to me that the new nomination process actually allows me to very usefully apply an adapted version of the Bechdel test in deciding what to offer, come signups: if two or more female characters don't appear among the nominated characters, I probably shouldn't offer to write it. Whereas before I would have to guess whether someone requesting The Illiad was more likely to request Achilles/Patroclus or Briseis/Chryseis, now I should be more able to figure it out based on what was nominated. (Not that there was ever any doubt in my mind concerning that particular example.) Between that and the "Women Being Awesome" freeform tag, I should be able to ensure I get to write something nicely female-centric, despite the deeply pervasive bias for male characters seen throughout the nominations.

Apparently Yuletide nominations will open in the very near future. I'm still agonizing over what to nominate; two of my nominations (and later, requests) will be for Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? (I've requested this every year I've done Yuletide) and The ILLUMINATUS! Trilogy. Both fandoms either got no or very few offers last year, so I figure that if I pick a fandom which is only semi-obscure as my third choice it is virtually certain to be written--which is of course it making me agonize over the choice all that much more. Or I could pick another ultra-rare fandom and see what happens. I haven't decided yet.

Shows I Watch

I know that my updating lately is inconsistent, and a large part of that is how I position myself in fandom; I still think of myself largely as a Buffy fan, and of course since I'm not up to date on the comics or anything (and don't seem to be able to find the time to participate in femslash_minis) there isn't much to be said. But these are the shows that are currently airing which I do make a point of keeping up-to-date with:

ETA: Obviously Sarah Jane Adventures would be on this list too were it not for Liz Sladen's sad death--although Wikipedia claims that the filmed episodes of Series 5 will air this fall.

Too Much Time on IMDb

So, the actress who played Mezoti (the Borg little girl) on Star Trek: Voyager? Apparently played "Girl Student" in Serenity. Which, if you remember, was also the name of the role played by Demetra Raven, aka Jenny Grimaldi, aka the baseball girl from "Chosen," the Buffy series finale. What, did Whedon only hire extras for that scene if they had the appropriate geek credentials? (Except not, because the actors playing the other kids don't have anything interesting to be said about them.)

(Also, !Mezoti's IMDB page picture? Guh, although not exactly subtle. If only there were a way to AU canon enough to get aged-up Naomi/Mezoti. But Naomi's accelerated aging would be a pain in trying to get that to work, not that canon ever really remembered that detail anyway, not to mention that when the relevant subpart of canon ends, they're in opposite quadrants of the galaxy. Maybe one could abandon the pretense altogether and just write Scarlett/Marley RPF. I don't know, at a con or something. Whatever.)

(And Demetra's web site makes me wince. Just, no. Please, God, no. Jenny Grimaldi would have better sense. And also be too busy fighting vampires and/or playing baseball.)

(Now I really want to buy Scarlett's EP, because, I don't even know why. I do love one of the reviews, though: "I must say that she isn't well-known here in germany and the place where i live." Yeah, and everywhere else on the planet where people don't have encyclopedia knowledge of Star Trek: Voyager. Well, either Star Trek or Reba. So pretty much everywhere.)

Rescuing myself from the parentheticals, this reminds me that Mesektet (aka White Room Girl) from Angel is the star of the new remake of Fame, the one that Stacey Shirk claims "is better" in her song "Ten Dollar Solo" from Commentary!: The Musical. (I learned this when both the old and new versions of Fame showed up in my Netflix suggestions.) And also apparently the Fame remake "was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, brother of [Commentary!] co-creator Maurissa Tancharoen." Who is in the new season of The Guild.

(My embarassment squick caused me to pause Guild 5x01 about two-thirds of the way through, so I haven't seen it yet. Am sad that the season probably won't have any Venom/Riley content in it, though. Can they get a spin-off? I really just want to watch Michelle Boyd and Teal Sherer play evil bisexual gamers now. Because, yeah, awesome.)

On the Very Possibility of Awesome Mary Sues?

Speaking as a het male, when I use a female character as a partial self-insert (and I prefer doing so over male characters) I generally want her to do double-duty as lust object as well. This creates absolutely zero cognitive dissonance in me. (Whether that's because I can keep the roles of self-insert and lust object separate in my head, or because I'm assuming that if I were going to be a fantastic woman than of course that would include being the sort of woman I as a het man desire, I can't say.)

At the end of the day, it's absolutely true that we need to retire the term "Mary Sue" as a term which has moved beyond the limits of redeemability. But it is equally important to continue to try to redeems those characteristics (other than bad writing simpliciter--and hey, if you want to try to redeem bad writing simpliciter, power to you) which at times the term may have been understood to denote.

An anonymous remixer remixed my drabble Not Really Here and turned it into Not Really Here (The 'Stand in the Place that You Are' Mix). I wouldn't have thought it was possible to remix "Not Really Here": it's just a quick little drabble that sets up a cool idea and then is done. But they've managed to expand it into a whole relationship between Drusilla, Spike, and the false memory of an eleven-year-old Dawn. (And their Drusilla voice is pretty awesome, which is good because there's nothing which throws me out of a fic like a badly-written Drusilla voice.)

So, the ten fics of mine on AO3 with the most hits? Seven of them are <user name="yuletide" site="livejournal.com"> fics: Though I Walk Through the Shadow (T:TSCC, John/Savannah), If on a Yuletide morn a slasher (Calvino litfic), Beleza and the B.E.A.S.T. (fairy tales), The Children's Crusade (T:TSCC, Sarah & Savannah), The Orphans (Arthurian legend, Arthur/Morgan), Glories Stream (Dar Williams), and Dancing Lessons (Arcadia, Thomasina/Septimus). Yuletide really gets you eyeballs on your fics.

Perhaps surprisingly, two of the remaining three are also in Yuletide-elligible fandoms: The iPhone of Queen Susan (Narnia, Petrer/Susan) at #4 and Fatherhood (Parent Trap, gen) at #8. I explain the iPhone fic by pointing out it's a kinky fic (spanking) in a fandom that most people have basic knowledge of, but I'm not quite sure how to explan the Parent Trap fic.

#10 is Quartet for Two Voices (BtVS, Giles/Kennedy). I was even more heavy on the freeform tags than usual with that fic, so I'm thinking people found it while searching for lesbian characters of color and such.

So I've committed about five and a half thousand words of Remix in a Yuletide-elligible fandom, with the potential for writing more. (Some people who were present at minimerlin 2011 might know which Yuletide-elligible fandom.) Anybody interested in beta-ing it? I'm mostly looking for spelling, grammar, and mechanics, maybe with a bit of "girlparts don't work that way" thrown it; I'm pretty confident with the theme, tone, plot, characterization, canon consistency, etc.

Remix reaveal is May 1, so I'd need it back before then.
