I was debating whether to post something to this effect and had more or less decided against, but I completely agree.

There are different levels of dominance of different kinds of discourse about race in the US and UK, and in that sense [livejournal.com profile] peasant_ is right: there is more emphasis on racial conflict in the US public sphere than in the UK equivalents. BUT the kinds of critiques of privilege that get made more and more often in fandom are not the dominant US discourses but critiques of them, and that's why it annoys people so much when they are countered with slightly different dominant discourses from a different (but not all that radically different at the end of the day) location.

I tried to post about this once here though I think I hedged too much with the personal to actually make much of an intervention.
