Okay, that makes sense. It's not how I watch the show, but it does make sense. I am not sure SPN is meant to have heroes, or that it's a world with a force of good--it's very much in the horror genre, which to my state of mind is all about a hostile universe that wants to destroy you, and desperate people trying to survive, who may or may not be all that Good with a capital G. There are certainly allusions to the possibility that there might be a force of good, but mostly all we ever see is different flavours of evil duking it out and the boys trying to save themselves and as many innocent bystanders as possible--while being manipulative scam artists and petty criminals. But if other people are looking to SPN for heroism, of course they would expect the main characters to get karmic rebound for their fuckups.
I can completely relate to that sentiment--one of my great frustrations with HP was that HP was supposed to be a grand story about Good vs Evil but to my own moral sense it appeared to be a grand story about deeply stupid inhuman staggeringly evil vs nasty and banal businesslike evil vs highly manipulative smiley-faced evil. I have never been able to locate Good in that universe which is why I am considered an evil Gryffindor basher, and I can totally live with that.
