"Denouement" means "un-knotting," so maybe it could be viewed either as a process or the endpoint of that process?

BTW, in the "hero up a tree" version, I think the important part is that the hero has to get zirself down from the tree--although in something like a caper movie (or Firefly's Out of Gas) the true hero is the team, not the team leader.
