It's fiction--to me that's the sticking point. Talking about a novel's "claims to truth" just strikes me as weird. (OTOH, when I saw the movie, I felt like some of that distance was lost, for whatever reason--possibly because movies traditionally are more likely to stop and explain to their audience some point of science or history, and novels tend to handle exposition more gracefully?)
