I suppose I'm enough of a legal realist (an inevitable result of having a police officer as a father) to believe the law is only that which is enforced; but I'm also enough of an idealist to be uncomfortable with breaking any law that is written down. I inhabit an uncomfortable hermeneutic position on matters of law (and for that matter ethics) wanting rigidity and pragmatism at the same time.
I understand what you mean about too much even for buying food, but I feel like we all feel like we spend "too much" on our obsessions even if we aren't starving.
