And, too, as Gloss said, the fact that you can't know who's reading. I post my stories all over the place. I try to sell many of them as original fiction, where I have no idea who's reading, even less so than on LJ.
It's just never occurred to me that I should care whether the audience is male or female or whether fellow fans are male or female.
That seems to be the sole point of this gaze thing, even though the original poster was trying to say it was something in the text itself, which is what had me so confused.
