It's actually called a yoke; I didn't make that up. I would imagine clutching it to one's breast would make for a significant change in attitude.
I was definitely thinking of the non-italics being in Dawn's POV. I agree that whatever dress River would be wearing wouldn't particularly show off her curves; however, both Faith and Dawn have good imaginations.
