Socratic Dialogue II
“Rupert Giles.”
“Mr. Giles, I am Lydia Chalmers, of the Council of Watch—”
“Miss Chalmers, you can tell Roger that—”
“I’m not calling on behalf of Roger, Mr. Giles. He doesn’t even know I am calling. Nor would I think he would approve if he did know.”
“Well, then by all means, please go on.”
“Have you received any intelligence as to Drusilla’s recent whereabouts?”
“Lydia, we’re stretched to the limit doing our best to find and train Slayers, then send them to where they can do the most good. Our ability to pay attention to anything else, including the activities of insane vampires, is nonexistent.”
“Whereas the Council retains an exhaustive information-gathering structure, while being helpless to actually act in any effective capacity. Whatever Roger may say or believe, we don’t have any choice but to work together.”
“Can I assume there is information about Drusilla you feel that I should know about?”
“Our latest reports have Drusilla traveling through Eastern Europe, particularly Romania. There’s no way you can be ignorant of the particular significance that region holds for this branch of the Order of Aurelius.”
“You think she wants something from the Romani?”
“One possible hypothesis is that she might be trying to de-ensoul Drusilla.”
“Dear God.”
“Our reaction exactly.”
“Thank you for informing me, Lydia. I appreciate it greatly. Do you have any suggestions on how we could work this?”
“Well, seeing that your most senior Slayer is already in Europe and your second-senior is still in the States. . . .”
“You suggest I send Buffy to Romania and Faith to L.A.”
“Well, yes, sir.”
“Lydia, there’s no need to pretend to be so damned deferential. I know you’re not Roger.”
“Thank you, Rupert.”
“I’ll send Buffy and Faith right away. Oh, and Lydia?”
“Yes?”
“My condolences on Travers death; I know he meant a lot to you. We rarely saw eye-to-eye on means, but he was a believer. He truly believed what he was doing was necessary for the good of the world.”
“It means a lot that you recognize that, Rupert. Thank you.”
