Because to me, that's Captain Kirk logic, saying that we can escape moral duty due to circumstances. And it seems to be exactly the sort of logic under which Bush is operating: civil liberties are all well and good in peace time (he says), but we are at war now, and there are terrorists out there, and they hate America....
At which point are we in enough danger that betraying our principles becomes understandable or even forgiveable?
