Oct. 15th, 2006 03:03 pm1) Right now, what do you feel are the 1, 2 or 3 best stories you've written since becoming/admitting you're a fanfic writer? What was it about that/those stories that really made you proud, or thrilled you about them?
Richard the Third, Act Two, Scene Three, Line Sixteen -- Ender's Game. Probably my favorite fanfic out of those I've written. This was written for
apocolyptathon, and I my recipent never commented, so I don't know what they thought, but it hits my kinks like whoa. It just captures what I love about Valentine, and about Peter, and about the Valentine/Peter relationship so well (if I may say so myself), while also tackling some of the political and ethical issues from canon--albeit without providing any easy answers. Everytime I read it, I'm just overrun by my own squee; I really love this story.
Divine Interventions -- Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is the longest completed fanfic I've written, at 16 chapters and 30,000 words. The extra length allows me to develop storylines in ways I haven't been able to in a shorter fic, and lets thematic richness slip in places naturally rather than be placed so as to hit the reader over the head. By the end of the novella each of the characters has completed their own arc, and we've resolved all the plotlines culminating in a great apocalyptic showdown between good and evil, and I'm quite proud of it as an example of craft.
The Fairest of Them All -- Angel/Firefly crossover. This is more or less the diametric opposite of Divine Interventions. There is no plot to speak of here, and the thematic elements are all deliberately placed with care, and there is a much greater focus on language (while in DI the style was much more transparent, not being written in River voice). But I think this works just as well as quite a different, more sensual type of story.
Insofar as I can see, none of these have anything at all in common. "R3 2.3.16" and "The Fairest of Them All" were written for ficathons, while Divine Inteventions is the result of an independent plotbunny that struck me long before I had even entered my first 'thon. DI is long and "Fairest" is short, with "R3 2.3.16" somewhere in between. They're all written in third-person limited, but I don't think that's a particularly meaningful observation to make, as that is true of most of my fanfic (and I'm perfectly happy with those stories written in first- or second-person).
2) What Professional writer (that is, paid author) would you love to see write a fanfiction story? What ship or fandom? Tell me a little about it.
Well, I still really want to see that Jane Austen/J.R.R. Tolkien crossover by Terry Pratchett.
And I'm not really familiar with a large number of living contemporary non-genre authors. Italo Calvino and Gertrude Stein would probably have written some awesome Buffy femslash, though.
3) What show/cartoon/kid's book from your childhood would you be amused to see in fanfiction? Would you consider writing one for this early love?
Well, I know someone on my flist has recently posted She-Ra fic. I'd link to it, but I can't remember who.
In general, the main reason I'd not write fanfic for childhood loves would be that the canon is too unwiedly or else I just don't remember it well enough (or both). It's not as if I consider anything sacred. I do plan on writing Secret Garden fanfic, although that'll be musicalverse. (Although I wasn't that old when I saw the musical for the first time, either--twelvish?)
4) Is there a fanfic of yours you'd like to see made into a Broadway show? Tell me about it!( "_____________: the Musical!"
Bonfire Night -- Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In which Dawn and Giles have to protect their niece Madelyn from the poetry of T.S. Eliot. Bonfire Night: The Musical would sort of be like Cats, I guess, only with more of a plot and with Dawn and Giles being married and snarking at each other--in song, I suppose. I'd pay to watch ASH sing about America's poetic expatriates and the exploits of Guy Fawkes. (Michelle doesn't sing enough in OMWF for me to have an opinion on her voice, but she could dance and look pretty and the fic does have a scene in it in which Dawn takes off her clothes. Although Dawn's in her thirties in the fic, and Michelle isn't--yet.)
5) Think about it--what could possibly be the WORST crossover out there? A story that Should Never Be Written? Hamtaro/V? Lost/Gilligan's Island? Come up with your most terrible pairing!
This is like my asking Ari for the stories she will never write; once one comes up with something, one can see how it would begin to work. As far as I am concerned, nothing is sacred, everything is possible, and there is no governor anywhere. Hail Eris!
