[livejournal.com profile] dirty_diana: I'm not a Merlin person, but I checked out [livejournal.com profile] merlinrpf and it has 222 entries since creation last October. As RPF fandoms generally go, that seems pretty big to me. Edit: Not huge, but they probably won't qualify for Yuletide again.

[livejournal.com profile] musesfool: I guess the question is, then, are they interested in doing remix? And they need to come here and tell me that, if they are.

A gauntlet has been thrown down. Go here to rise to the challenge.

My RPF doesn't fall into any category that has any chance at all of becoming a qualifying fandom ("Jossverse RPF" is totally a [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fandom), but the idea that someone remixing one of my stories will have the option of remixing one of the RPF fics just fills me with squee. Because my RPF is pretty meta to begin with, so remixing it, retelling the story in a way that comments somehow on the original fic, would bring it to just truly insane levels of meta-ness, on par with The "All You Zombies" Remix of Incurable.

alixtii: Mal and Kaylee, from Serenity the Movie. Text: "I Love My Captain." (Mal/Kaylee)
So, [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 is live, and I've read the remix that was written for me: Where the River Meets the Dawn (The Strobe Lights and the Disco Remix) is a remix of my River/Dawn [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis piece Where the River Meets the Dawn. There are several significant changes my remixer made to my story.
  • It fits into, and makes references to, comics canon.
  • Mal, Zoe, and Jayne are all still alive, so nobody calls Kaylee "Captain."
  • It's Inara's shuttle, rather than Serenity herself, which crash lands into Earth.
  • Zoe is among the crew who appears on Earth, and Saffron is not. Mal and Jayne still don't appear in the story (even though in this 'verse it's because they're still on Serenity and not because they're dead).
  • It extends the story to cover the return of the Serenity crew to their own universe--which means, sadly, that River and Dawn are broken up in it.
  • It's told from Caridad's POV. (The original alternates between River's and Dawn's.)

That last bullet point is certainly the most interesting--it makes the story down to earth in a way my original really isn't. There's a lot of little details that Caridad notices and associations that she makes, and when I say a lot, I mean a lot, so that it gives the story a fascinating texture, where she's much more interested in all of that than in the soi-disant main action.

I was reading old meta posts in Elizabeth's journal after coming across one while googling, trying to find an old post of mine (my remix letter from last year), and it directed me back to this conversation I had with Ari two years ago and reminded me how much I drew on it both consciously and unconsciously (I remembered the conversation, but not all the specifics) when writing Sibling Revelries.

I can't find that remix letter, even when I try to calendar view, but I can recreate it pretty well. So if you're reading this, remixer, I know you've already found my fic index and I hope you find it useful. (And sorry about Hue of Dungeons, School of Night being flocked; I'm not quite sure why it was, except as an accidental leftover from a different time with different needs.) I've been pretty prolific in my day (and by "my day" I mean "undergrad"), so I'm sure you'll be able to find something with which you can work. There's het, femslash, gen, gr0n, even m/m in the right fandoms. And there's four fandoms I have the necessary five stories for (BtVS, AtS, VMars, and XMM), plus a bunch of others besides--and if you pulled Buffy or Angel, you have an embarassment of options. (That's assuming things other than riches can come in embarassments.)

I've already written my fics the way I wanted them, insofar as time and effort and ability allowed. So go and make them yours. (For pretty much everything that it isn't [livejournal.com profile] yuletide,* I'm a big believer in being true to the story one has to tell over making something one's "recipient" will like. As I say in my profile.)

ETA: Elizabeth, being very Elizabeth, found the post. (I'm flattered she turned her effort in my direction.) My original wording: "Whichever story you chose, I have presumably written it the way I wanted to, time and ability and laziness being the only constraints.

"Now go make it yours." I like the original version better, as I usually do.[/eta]

*Even for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide one might say I more consistently approach it as a gift in the receiving than in the giving. And note that this means that even non-[livejournal.com profile] yuletide holiday fest exchanges aren't quite approached as gifts by me (which is in part a necessity one's own abilities and tastes, as a femslasher, don't always quite line up with the mainstream).

. . .

I didn't get Ari as a remixee this year, the way I did last year (I could have remixed "Mad Tea Party" and she could have remixed "Towards Zero"!), so I'm not in a huge flail the way I was last year (has it been a whole year already?), just the regular issues about writing remixes not written in genres one is used to. I haven't actually read the fics of my remixee yet, so I don't know if they're any good, but I have a lot of reasons to be optimistic in that regard, and even if they aren't that's not really a problem.

Remix!
alixtii: Drusilla holding a knife to Angel's throat. Text: "Got Freud?" (Drusilla)
This post on person and tense made me think about how I used these in my own writings. I know that I've written several fics in the much-dreaded second person, and I feel like I use past and present tenses about equally. But I decided to go back to my index and make a list.

1st person )

2nd person )

Third Person (POV character is "she," "he," etc.)
Everything else . . . my fic index is here. [ETA: 38% of my third-person fic is written in present tense; the other 62% is written in past tense. The longer a fic is, the more likely it is written in past tense; the shorter it is, the more likely it is written in present tense.]

[. . .]

Figure 1 ) The interesting thing here is that whenever there is a "you," regardless of whether "I" or "you" are the POV character, in every case but one the story is in present tense. In "Permutations" the shift from 3rd/1st person to 2nd person even happens to exactly coincide with the shift from past tense to present tense. When I stop and think about it, this makes sense. Having a "you" foregrounds the act of telling, even if it is only a character's internal monologue as she addresses herself during the story's events, so the story by necessity takes place as it is being told, whether it be Moriarty and Holmes plummeting to their deaths at Reichenbach Falls in "Requiem at Reichenbach" or Dawn preparing Beatrice for the Cruciamentum in "Watcher's Burden." Indeed, in "Dear My Ideal Audience," the telling of the story is completely inseparable from the events it described (a dynamic which is integral to metafiction, as we'll see below).

In the one instance in which a story with a "you" in it is not in the present tense, it is still not written in the past tense, but rather in the future tense. Since we know that it is Lilah who is speaking and Wesley who is being spoken to, though, we are also privy to an implied "now" in which the act of narration is taking place, one in which Lilah is imagining for Wes' benefit one possible future. What we end up with is a series of concentric circles.

Events of "On Her Knees" <-- Lilah narrating "On Her Knees" to Wes <-- The reader reading Alixtii's fanfic "On Her Knees"

The difference between "On Her Knees" and "Requiem at Reichenbach" is simply that the inner ring--the 'verse in which the diegetic act of naration is taking place--in "Requiem" is more fully fleshed out, whereas we have no idea where Lilah and Wes are or what they are doing as Lilah narrates the story to Wes. This difference is enough for me to refer to "Requiem" as being present tense; it's simply that the bulk of the narrative takes place in flashbacks. Even more bluntly, "On Her Knees" contains no present-tense verbs, while "Requiem" does. Compare, say, Poe's "A Tell-Tale Heart."

Moriarty's memories of Holmes <-- Moriarty remembering (at Reichenbach, as he falls to his death) <--The reader reading

Metafiction operates by blurring the division between the innermost sphere and the ring which surrounds it, as in both "Dear My Ideal Audience" and "Incurable (The 'All You Zombies' Remix)."

River Tam and the Ideal Audience <---> Joss Whedon doing a creative writing exercise <-- Alixtii doing a meme in Ari's journal

River as agent of Wolfram & Hart  <---> Ari as White Room Girl <-- Alixtii writing a remix of Ari's fic
River as agent of Wolfram & Hart <---> River in the asylum <-- Alixtii writing a remix of Ari's fic

As Ari says in the comments to "Incurable (The 'All You Zombies' Remix)," "Clearly where [one] need[s] a flowchart to understand the construction of [a] fic, something is right."

Title: Best Friends Forever (Devon Days Remix) [DVD Commentary]
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: PG
Pairing: Willow/Xander
Timeline/Spoilers: Takes between in an AU summer between seasons 6 and 7. Spoilers up to "Grave."
Summary: There is a wisdom hidden in the innocence of the young.
A/N: Remix of "Brick by Brick" by Sarafu ([livejournal.com profile] obsessivemuch). Part of the Remix Redux IV. This is the DVD commentary. You can find the original remix here.

Obviously, no one has asked for a commentary in the short time since the reveal of authors. However, I did find that writing a remix was such a fascinating and different process that I wanted to write a little bit on how I did it and what my remix philosophy was, and this seemed like the best format in which to do so.
