It seems to me - though I could of course be mistaken - that I've seen Americans use it to cover both jobs that would be working class in Britain and Ireland (manufacturing, labouring, the skilled trades) and jobs that seem more middle class such as, here, engineering. So I think there's overlap but it's not necessarily synonymous.
