Well, enfaith specified Crazy!Fred, so that more or less controlled how old Dawn would be. Writing pre-"Chosen" Dawn was a lot of fun, though; it's a completely different dynamic.
Fred seeing Dawn seemed like a logical extrapolation from canon, and--perhaps more importantly--gave them something to talk about in their scene together. This is the second fic in which I've written crazy!Fred; I'm afraid I've begun to make her sound a little too much like a math textbook (or even Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, which I was reading at the time). But I'm usually busy trying to make her sound like herself and not Drusilla, whom I write more often.
The zombie cat seemed to me the way a Scoobie (other than Willow, Xander, and perhaps Giles) would respond to Schrodinger's cat, interpreting "both dead and alive at the same time" as "undead." It made a convenient running gag.
