In which I realize I've had this journal for several months and have never done a meme. I don't know how many people are following this, but if anybody is stopping by I'd like to do one of those interactive give-the-first-line-of-your-favorite-book-and-see-who-can-identify-it memes. Names of people and places are replaced with initials. On books with intoductory matter rendering it unclear what should count as the first line, I went with the line that sounded coolest.

The list is:

1. “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” If [livejournal.com profile] karabair hadn't guessed this, being the huge Orwell fan she is, I would have been very surprised. It's George Orwell's dystopia Nineteen Eighty-Four.

2. “When Z. was thirty years old he left his home and the lake of his home and went into the mountains.” Friedrich Niuetzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle.

3. “The Great Diaspora of the Human Race which started more than two millennia ago when the L.-S. Drive was disclosed, and which continues to this day and shows no sign of slowing, made the writing of history as a single narrative—or even many compatible narratives—impossible.”

4. "‘I see . . .' said the vampire thoughtfully, and slowly he walked across the room towards the window.” Anne Rice's existential masterpiece--and quite possibly the only decent book she ever wrote--Interview with the Vampire, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] karabair.

5. “Once upon a time when the world was young there was a Martian named S.”

6. “When M. L. was sent to M. Manor to live with her uncle everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen.” Frances Hodgson Burnett's childhood classic The Secret Garden, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle.

7. “One thing was certain, that the white kitten had had nothing to do with it—it was the black kitten’s fault entirely.” Lewis Carroll's second Alice book (unless you count Alice's Adventures Under Ground as it's own book), Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] karabair.

8. “It was the year when they finally immanentized the Eschaton.”

9. “‘Who is J. G.?’” Ayn Rand might have been a horrible philosopher (i.e. I disagree with her), and a misogynist to boot, but the multi-valuedness of this work and, yes, its philosophical flavor makes it one of my favorites. Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] karabair.

10. “Even in high summer, T. was a haunted place; I., Lady of Duke G., looked out over the sea from the headland.”

11. “The old ram stands looking down over rockslides, stupidly triumphant.”

12. “A squat gray building of only thirty-four stories. Over the main entrance the words, CENTRAL LONDON HATCHERY AND CONDITIONING CENTRE, and in a shield, the World State's motto, Community, Identity, Stability.” Ari came close with 1984, but that's #1 above. This is that other great dystopia of the 20th century, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] karabair.

And, because I can, some netty form memes:

Fanficton
Do you read or write fanfiction? Yes, both.
When did you first start reading/writing fanfiction? 1998
What was your first fandom? Star Trek: Voyager
First ship? Doc/7
What website do you use most? My livejournal.
What do you think of Fanfiction.net? Useful if chaotic.
What fandoms have you written in? Angel, Buffy, Firefly, Robert Heinlein, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, X-Men
Pairings? Doc/7, Laz/Lor, Buffy/Immortal, Faith/Spike, Spike/Dru, Wesley/Fred, Ethan/Dawn, Willow/Kennedy, Riley/Sam, Mal/Saffron.
Any fandoms you would like to write in? West Wing -- but only as a crossover with Buffy or something else supernatural.
Do reviews affect how you write in any way? Of course.
Do you use a beta? I've just started. Any offers--I'm in the market.
What ratings do you read/write? All.
What warnings have you used on your fiction/read? Character death, futurefic, femslash, het, BDSM, underage, etc...
Do you have any squicks? Not that I've discovered yet, but everyone has something. . . .
Do you Role-play online? If so, what? No.
Have you ever stolen something from another person's work? Not counting the source text, no.
Favorite fandom to write/read? Jossverse.
Favorite pairing? Mal/Kaylee.
Favorite writer/writers? My flist.
How long should a chapter be? Long enough to get from the beginning of it to the end. It really depends on the format.
Do you write/read drabbles? Yes.
Any fandoms you avoid? Avoid? Not really--but I don't explore far beyond the Jossverse.
Pairings you avoid? Most m/m slash. Buffy/Angel.
Warnings you avoid? None, really.
Do the number of reviews tell how good a story is? Of course not.
What do you think of Mary Sues? I can't say I've ever actually seen one outside of FF.net; the knee-jerk reaction is so strong I fear we've gone to the opposite extreme.
Have you ever flamed someone? No.
Have you ever been flamed? No.
That's it, aren't you glad? *shrug*

A Fun Angel: The Series Survey
Did you follow Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? No. I started watching well after both series had begun.
What did you think of Doyle? I'm not sure 9 episodes was the ideal number after which to kill an opening credit character for shock. It would have been better if Jesse had been in the opening credits in BtVS.
Was Wesley a good replace for Doyle? Wesley's different. No comparison is possible.
Who do you ship from the show? Wes/Fred. Wes/Lilah. Wes/Faith. So, basically any Wesley het.
Who do you refuse to ship from the show? Refuse is a strong word. I tend to avoid m/m slash (although am convinced on textual grounds that Spike/Angel is canon) and am not all too fond of Fred/Gunn.
Which season was your favorite? Why? The 5th season, where the allegory and metaphorical elements returned to the forefront.
Which characters from Buffy did you want to see as regulars on Angel? Faith. (Drusilla!?)
Faith: Like her? Loathe her? Don't care about her? Loved her as a character, but I still see her as primarily a BtVS character. I miss season 3 Faith, though.
What did you think of Fred and Gunn's relationship? I was sorry for Wesley.
Did you want to see more of Darla? In flashbacks, yes. And especially Dru.
Which season Wesley is your favorite? Season 4. One of the few things I liked about that season.
Which was better, Spin The Bottle or Smile Time? Undecided?
Did you cry when Cordy, Fred and Wesley died? No.
Was Angel out of line by erasing his friend's memories when it came to Connor? Out of what line? To what standard, exactly, are we holding him?
Did you like street!Gunn or lawyer!Gunn better? They were the same character. Only evolving.
Are you one of those creeps who believe Fred and Lindsey were twins, seperated at birth? Never heard of this theory. Why is it creepy--do they then ship Fred/Lindsey?
Who was better, Angel or Spike? What are you trying to do, start a 'ship war?
Who do you think survived the alley? They're still there, fighting.
What happened to Justine? Is she still handcuffed by the docks?! I'd love to find out.
Do you think Dru and Darla had sexual relations? Yes.
Who did Angel belong with, Buffy or Cordy? Neither. And Buffy belongs with the Immortal.
Favorite overall episode? "Deep Down"? "Destiny"? "The Girl in Question"?
Do you think Joss needs to create a new series based on characters from Angel and Buffy? I'd loved it if he did, but I'm growing to accept the benefits of having a closed canon. I'd rather see a bazillion Serenity sequels.
Do think Wesley deserved forgiveness for kidnapping Connor? Does anyone deserve anything in Angel? Forgiveness is an act of grace.
Were Lilah and Wesley in love? They could have been, if things had ended differently.
Did you write hate mail to the WB when they cancelled the series? And, did you send hate mail to Joss when he killed Fred off? No.
Spike called Wesley Percy a lot. Do you think Spike read Harry Potter? Maybe. But that has nothing to do with calling Wesley Percy.
Are you glad this is over and done with? No.
