I don't remember that character at all from the book
My point exactly about bookverse!Dr. Craven being forgettable, nyet?
Mary/Colin's guardian (whose name I also don't remember) might work, too
Yeah, Archibald/Mary would have a lot of the same dynamics, but is I think a little squickier because a) Archibald is more sympathetic, so I find him perving on Mary a lot more disturbing, and b) the incest vibes are even stronger with Archie, as he's Mary's uncle (her mother's brother-in-law in the musical and film, her father's brother-in-law in the book) and not just her uncle's brother (her mother's/father's sister's husband's brother).
Of course, neither of those would necessary be a bad thing if a fic writer chose to take it that way, although I do think it'd be a littler harder to keep Archie/Mary in character.
And I'm comfortable with time-travel, especially in crossovers
I like my crossovers to be as seamless as possible, but time-travel is of course canon in Harry Potter. Still the more it takes to set up the crossover, the more it has to "earn" it for me, and I don't think the thrill of seeing Mary and Neville together all by itself would be enough of a payoff for me to counterbalance the time travel. So it would depend on what the author did with it. I know plenty of writers on my flist who could do amazing things with the pairing and more than earn the time travel.
You are, of course, totally welcome to write Neville Longbottom/Mary Lennox. Or Archibald Craven/Mary Lennox, for that matter.
If I write anything at all (And you're supposed to persuade me against) I am going to write musicalverse Neville Craven/Mary Lennox.
