I watched the premiere of The Sarah Connor Chronicles online. So I saw the entire episode already.
It doesn't matter. The last hour, watching it on television, was still an hour of totally awesome squee. Can't wait until tomorrow!
When I didn't even know what channel Fox was, I realized just how long it has been since I've watched television.

Dec. 1st, 2007 12:00 amOMG, so many possibilities for femslash--why doesn't Hollywood make more movies like this where all the characters are female? Oh, yeah, right. That's why. But really, flist? Remind me to watch more movies intended for teenaged girls, okay? ETA: And, according to
femslash_today there are at least two femslash fics in that fandom, both written by the same flister (
viciouswishes) and in the same pairing (the obvious femslash OTP one). ETA2: And it's actually the same fic, indexed twice. Which means there's half as much femslash written for this fandom as I thought there was. Which surprises me, really; I expected it to have a small but loyal fandom, like other nominally heterosexual female-heavy fandoms (like Devil Wears Prada or Bring It On). ETA3: But in the comments of that fic, there is a rec to another one! (Linking to the rec rather than the fic mostly because of the awesome Emma banner.)
ETA4: What I really want is one of those fics where everyone's inexplicably gay and the pairing list is something like "Gen/Ann, Joan/Tina, Casey/Zoey." Or whatever permutation.
There's a 'cest possibility, too--well, loads of them, actually, if one's willing to go parent/child. But there's a sibcest possibility as well, which is the one I was thinking of. And it's not my thing as much, but there are people on my flist who'd be all over the coach/skater crossgen (and this time, I'm actually not thinking of Ari).
Unlike Will Brooker, I don't find Hayden Panettiere hot. (To be clear, I do not think Will Brooker is hot; Will Brooker thinks she is hot, as per
fandebate. Well, I've never met him, so it's not impossible that I would think he was hot were I to meet him, but I am straight enough that I find it unlikely. So unless Will Brooker is actually David Tennant in disguise. . . .) Pretty, yes. Adorable, absolutely.
Michelle Trachtenberg, on the other hand. . . . WhedonCon 2008, people. (I really need to write a sequel to that sometime.)
The supporting characters in this movie rock. It's a shame they get so little screen time, but that's part of what makes them rock--that they manage to be interesting and engaging so quickly with so little information.
Um, Christophe Beck? The fact that it felt like the "Buffy/Angel Love Theme" was playing all through the movie is not a good thing. At least, I don't think it is. If it had been the Nerf Herder theme instead, that would have been pretty cool.
katieliz once gave away a poster for this movie on her radio show.

Sarah Jane Adventures
Nov. 20th, 2007 10:24 pm( spoilers for the first series )
At least Sarah Jane is, if you squint really hard, an anti-establishment figure and not a monarchist conspiracy like Torchwood, so it's more like Kirk breaking the prime directive than Roslin spoilering the spoilers. But I can't quite construct the show as promoting vigilantism, either--it just wants to have its cake and eat it too. And I find that rather problematic.

Sarah Jane Adventures
Sep. 29th, 2007 10:06 am( spoilers for Revenge of the Slitheen )
It occurs to me that SJA is, in a lot of ways, the flip side of Torchwood, and Who is the synthesis of the two. Jack is the Doctor's dark side, Lonely God and Lord of Time, answerable to no one and capable of genocide with a quip, and Sarah Jane is his ethical side, the part that says "This is where I stand; I can do no other."
Which is of course yet another reason why TW/SJA crossovers need to happen. (Spunky investigative journalist takes down secret illegal extragovernmental organization, with the help of teenagers! Would hit my kinks so hard.)

I'll probably wait until tomorrow (meaning, later today, Saturday, after I've gotten some sleep) to read all the stuff that's been posted since I started trying to catch up.
For right now, I'll just watch the second part of Revenge of the Slitheen. Non-spoilery thoughts about the first part: wow, Maria's family really has the Keith/Veronica/Lianne dynamic going on, doesn't it? Even down to the snark. Excellent fathers FTW.

Old Comics Wednesday
Jun. 13th, 2007 05:20 pmStopped at the comics store in the C.H. mall yesterday on my way to give blood. They didn't have the Dark Phoenix trade, but they did have a few things I'd been wanting.

Phoenix: Endsong
Jun. 9th, 2007 12:16 amSquee? Okay, that was pretty awesome. (
likeadeuce: I was supposed to hate it, y/n?)
Very action-packed, though. It could have used some--I think the term is "decompression"? But that's okay, there's always fanfiction for that.
The Cuckoos get many panels in this book, which is of the good. In all of these panels, they are awesome, because they are the Cuckoos and the Cuckoos are awesome. In many of these panels, they are in bed. With each other. Which is also awesome in its way. Just saying. (Actually, the implication I got from the art in this is that they all share a bed. Which I'm pretty sure contradicts Astonishing and New X-Men canon? But maybe they have three beds and sometimes they sleep separately and sometimes they all sleep together in the same bed anyway. That works for me.)
The whole thing is very, very will-to-powery. Which I guess is the point of the whole "Phoenix" storyline. It works for me.
Anyone have any clue where this fits into Astonishing?

Impossibly Pretty People. Guh.
Mar. 23rd, 2007 12:58 pm![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I think I think of Sunnydale as being inhabited by impossibly attractive people, but it never bothered me. For one thing, Sunnydale always struck me as a (white) upper-middle class community--even if many of the people were lower class people who could afford to act upper-class because of low property values. I went to a private high school and a private university and a lot of people were impossibly attractive there, too. I suppose if I thought about it it should have been a lot more of a problem on Veronica Mars, where the 02ers wouldn't have been able to afford to keep themselves looking like the 09ers.
Plus the Hellmouth lets you fanwank anything.
I only really think about this when I create OCs, because my first impulse is to always create OCs who are pretty (not so-impossibly-Mary-Sue-pretty, but pretty) girls, because I am shallow, and then I feel guilty and like a bad liberal. Then I think about the rest of the population of Sunnydale, realize an unattractive female would be really out of place, and stop feeling guilty. (I'm not someone who feels fic should be more realistic than canon. Unexpected realism--for example, witches in the Jossverse talking like real-world Wiccans--throws me out of the world of the fic.)
And I rarely mention in the fic whether the character is pretty, so it's really just my imagination I have to worry about. Although my Character Index has pictures of some of the OCs, which are usually taken from IMDb or otherwise of (impossibly attractive) actors.
I think tonight's Gilmore Girls was a rerun? Or maybe not. I only caught the tail end, waiting for VMars. In any case April remains the most adorable thing (erm, person? character?) ever. And Alexis is stil hot.
Is there GG fic which focuses on the interactions--in a gen way, I swear!--between Rory, Gigi, and April? Because I want that. Alongside BSG Cally/Gaius, of course. (Or Cally/anybody. Rec me good Cally fic?)
( Tina Majorino: still teh awesome )
In short, I loved everything about this episode except for the plot, and I didn't hate that either.

My brother and I have been, since Christmas, sharng a Netflix account.
*
Battlestar Galactica (The Miniseries, and Season 1 Disc 1)
Very slow-paced, and alternating between bits which are extremely will-to-powery (Roslin!) and those which aren't. Mostly, I've spent most of the time lusting after Specialist Cally. I mean, seriously.
( Specialist Cally picspam )
Will definitely keep watching, if only for Specialist Cally. ETA: And BSG is totally Harry Potter in space.
*
Big Love (Season 1 Disc 1)
It's like a freaky Veronica Mars AU. Not really my thing, although of course Tina Majorino is teh awesome, but there's enough to keep me interested.
*
Arrested Developement (Season 1 Discs 1+2)
A wonderful tale about a boy in love with his cousin. Wait, what do you mean there are other plotlines?
*
The DaVinci Code
Better movie than for which it seemed to be given credit. Audrey Tatou's and Ian McKellan's performances were of course excellent. Taking anything out of a Dan Brown novel seriously is a little silly, but I respect the intent. The foolishness from Holy Blood, Holy Grail--which in the novel never struck me as anything more than a convenient McGuffin--was certainly taken far too seriously. And the vibes of anti-Catholicism I never got from the book did suddenly seem to be present. Still, I mostly liked it.
*
Over the Hedge
William Shatner and Avril Lavigne make the most adorablest father/daughter pair ever.Maybe even more than Keith/Veronica.

This Week's Torchwood
Dec. 11th, 2006 10:06 pmReading my flist on a pretty extreme filter until I finish my grad school apps stuff, so I haven't read any reactions yet.
The episode made me cry.
Then so did Legally Blonde and Eight Crazy Nights. Not particularly difficult to make me cry--funeral scenes especially tend to do it. I get sort of jealous of all the sudden outpouring of love, I think.
Anyway, the point is that it's rather easy to make me cry and not necessarily an indicator of aesthetic quality. I think this was the weakest episode of the season so far. Which, again, not something to be ashamed of, every episode can't be as brilliant as "Countrycide" or "They Keep Killing Suzie," but the show is so consistently excellent that I found myself somewhat dissapointed. "Good" isn't good enough for me anymore; I've come to expect great.
( here be spoilers )
Next week's episode looks promising, though.

Tuesday's Gilmore Girls
Dec. 7th, 2006 02:29 pmOkay, you need to understand a few things:
X. I watch GG with my parents.
X. My mother and I 'ship Lorelai/Christopher; my father 'ships Lorelai/Luke.
X. My mother disagrees with my father and I that there is an implied contract between the show and viewer that Luke and Lorelai will get together. When we pointed out similar OTP arcs in other shows, her retort was "But those [arcs] were stupid." In short, she's confusing what she thinks should be with what is.
X. Neither of my parents would frame the debate using fanfic terminology, because they are not at all familiar with it.
X. Instead, they frame it using terminology I relayed to them from idiolects I encounter at work: Christopher is Lorelai's "babydad."
X. Whenever Krysten Ritter's character appears on screen, I shout out, "It's Gia Goodman!"
X. This has gotten old fast for my parents, who have never seen an episode of Veronica Mars in their life.

Somebody named Veronica
Nov. 28th, 2006 11:03 pm( spoilers for tonight's VMars ) off the top of my head I don't know how to conjugate the plural of machina--help anyone? ( More spoilers )
Yeah. I really have to say, not as good as Torchwood. Be cool again, Veronica. Be will-to-powery. Or have you matured beyond that? Is that little piece ofKitty Pryde Lilly Kane inside you dead?
Oh well. 5 days until the next Torchwood!

Torchwood 1x07
Nov. 27th, 2006 11:07 pmI don't really have any specific to say about this show, so no need for a spoiler cut. The show continues to be amazingly consistent in characterization, tone, and thematic content. The corruptive force of Torchwood affects each of our anti-heroes differently, but each one of them is so seriously--beautifully, deliciously--messed up. This week's ep wasn't quite as amazing as last week's tour de force, but that was a hard act to follow and it was still quite good.
And I continue to feel like somebody tampered with my download and gave me this amazing show when everybody else seemed to get something not nearly as awesome. Which I guess is mostly a shame for them, but it'd be nice to have someone with whom to share my squee.
And, based on the trailer for next week, much more squee to come!
