Could it be? Did I just finish another chapter of When the Rest of Heaven Was Blue, the Buffy/Spike fic that I started in 2008? Yes, yes I did. It took me four years, and the chapter is very short, but the penultimate chapter of this albatross of a fic is finally ready. And in need of a beta. Any volunteers?

Hey, maybe I'll manage to actually finish this thing before its tenth anniversary!

Funnily, it's actually thanks to Doctor Who that this fic progressed. One of the reasons why I haven't been writing much Buffy fic in the last few years is because my main writing fandom has been The Mentalist, and my Buffy voice was too much like my Lisbon voice. I couldn't hear Buffy's voice in my head without contantly turning into Lisbon, and I can't really write a character unless I can hear them. But I've been working on a Doctor Who fic for a ficathon for the last few weeks, which seems to have cleared the Lisbon voice from my head, and now I could finally return to this fic and not keep thinking that Buffy sounded too much like Lisbon.

(of course, as I was writing this post, I realised that both this chapter of "When the Rest..." and the Doctor/Clara fic I'm working on are yet another variation of the male sleeps and the female watches... Because apparently there's exactly one romantic plotline I can write for het couples)

Yesterday, I scheduled my grocery delivery for the 8 am - 10 am slot, since I had plans for the afternoon, and so I set my alarm for 7:30 so I could at least have brushed my teeth and put on pants, but I hit snooze instead of getting up, and then the doorbell rang at 7:45. Needless to say, teeth were not brushed and pants were not acquired - I did pull on a pair of boxer shorts before I answered the door, but I was still half-asleep while the guy handed me my groceries.

I guess being early like that almost makes up for two weeks ago, when they didn't show up at all? Even though they said they delivered it to someone in the household? And I spent half an hour on the phone with Amazon assuring them that as the only person who lives in my household, I had not received any groceries. They refunded my money, of course, but it meant I had to actually go do grocery shopping. And then my baby spring greens froze (I think it was the packaging? because the bagged salad doesn't do that) and I had to buy lunch all week anyway, because ugh, salad that has frozen and then defrosted is all limp and slimy and I couldn't bear a week of lunches of it.

In better news, my plans yesterday were meeting up with [personal profile] tenaciousmetoo, her husband, and [personal profile] innie_darling to go see the 30th anniversary screening of The Princess Bride, which was, of course, fantastic. It opened with Ben Mankiewicz interviewing Rob Reiner, and Rob Reiner telling cute stories about the filming of the movie (and then there was a second brief interview segment bookending the movie).

The movie still holds up. It's still sweet and funny and romantic and funny, eminently quotable with iconic performances, sword fights, pirates, evil princes, and true love conquering all. Do I wish Buttercup were a little more active in the fire swamp? I do. But I am heartened by having seen Robin Wright as General Antiope in Wonder Woman, and the progression of yet another princess from my youth (I was 17 when TPB came out, so I can't say childhood) becoming a general. Anyway! It was great to see it on the big screen again, and I definitely recommend it.

Then we had dinner at the Grey Dog - the food was good but the music was loud - and talked for a couple of hours. All in all, a great way to spend a grey October afternoon.

And then the Giants actually won last night! A game where they were supposed to be annihilated! So that was fun. *g* But now I am very sleepy and wish I was home in bed instead of at my desk at work. Sigh.

And then I will cry exactly the same way I cry every time I watch Third Watch's finale and it ends with Bosco still doing his thing. Every time.

(Apparently I cry thinking about that, too. Wow. Misty eyes over here, hello.)

In fact, I reject any other ending to this series.

Cat Wizards

Today I finished reading 'On Her Majesty's Wizardly Service', also known as 'To Visit The Queen', by Diane Duane. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Visit_the_Queen

It is about cats who are wizards, in the same universe as her Young Wizards books.

It's also a little difficult to summarise, because once you've got the hang of 'regular cats who live in New York, some of them with owners' and 'they do magic' then in the first book you get 'they turn into big cats when they visit an alternate universe full of dinosaur descendent intelligences' and bring that bit along to book two, and *then* it goes all steampunk, with nukes. And alternate timelines. And cats cradle is a game cats play with hyperstrings that make Gates happen? To other places and times and universes, sometimes on accident. And those instant transit gateways are located in regular transit centres, partly because the nature of gates and magic just likes it that way, so the main cats work in Grand Central as gate technicians and they get called to London to work on the gates there. Also there are prophecy ravens. And the Lone Power, Eldest, Fairest and Fallen.

Plus the fate of the cat mummies of egypt is a big plot point.

And they have to stop Queen Victoria from being assassinated.

And retrieve a book. Not a magic book, those are considerably safer.

And there's a whole lot of interpersonal stuff, but with nine life cats, so its simplest to think of them as aliens we live with but cant communicate with yet, so they're familiar and shaped by their interactions with humans and yet here presented as just a non human civilisation that runs intertwined with ours.

So, cat wizards, but... a bit complicated.

I suspect that the difficulty of summarising is why only the two books happened in paperback. I mean I'm sure there's people who'd like reading about cat society, and magic, and worldgates, and dinosaurs, and steampunk Victorian politics, its just difficult to sum up the story in a way that would get the book to its readers.

Also, possibly, difficult to get readers who want all those things at once.

But I do like them, so I'm very much looking forwards to book three, now in convenient ebook form available to buy through the authors website

This weekend I've binge-watched Mindhunter, the new Netflix series about the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit in the late 1970s, as it began developing the modern practice of profiling by interviewing incarcerated serial killers (and even invented the term "serial killer").

Dead Man's Help Wanted

I watched Help Wanted the other day, which is not at all an infrequent occurrence, and I still believe that if I could only watch one episode of television for the rest of my life, it would be that.

I'll never not fixate on the moment during the raid where Brenda's trying desperately to figure out where the suspect went and Sharon is the one who asks the questions that focus Brenda. First of all, I find it interesting that the men who work with Brenda every day can't or don't do this, but the woman who is an outsider steps in. Second, I love it because it's who the characters are: Brenda is disorder and Sharon is order. But this time, there was a new thing I noticed -- the drastic shift from the last episode they shared, Dead Man's Hand. That episode shows us what it looks like when Brenda's thinking gets muddied by her feelings toward Sharon. It straight up tells us, multiple times, that a guy dies because Brenda lets her judgement get so clouded by her dislike of Sharon. And we go from that to Brenda saving multiple young women because Sharon gives her clarity. So I'm just a little 😍 over here.

On Friday, two of the exchanges I'm participating in - Crossovering and Femslashex - went live! I got two lovely stories, one for each, though I was only able to read one before heading out of town sans laptop for a nonprofit retreat. But now I'm home with a real keyboard and can point to my delightful gifts.

Frank & the Phoenix (6874 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: David Blaize - E. F. Benson, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Frank Maddox/Newt Scamander
Characters: Frank Maddox, Newt Scamander
Additional Tags: Greek Mythology - Freeform, Crossover Pairings
Summary: Frank stumbles across a dangerous--and impossible--beast during one of his trips to Greece.

This story is everything I never knew I wanted from this crossover! The author does an amazing job of fitting the two canons together in a logical way, and pulling in all sorts of delicious details from both to build the story. It's from Frank's POV, which I loved because I'm a real sucker for the wizarding world seen through a muggle's eyes.

Illustrious the Return (1562 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Alpennia Series - Heather Rose Jones
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Barbara Lumbiert/Margerit Sovitre
Summary: Their second arrival to Saveze was very different from their first. Instead of arriving riding double on a horse, fleeing with no more than they could carry; now they arrived in a carriage emblazoned with the Saveze crest with servants and carts loaded with trunks full of books and clothes.

The very first Alpennia story on AO3, and it was written for me, hooray! It really feels in tune with their canonical relationship, with great characterization. It's also very grounded in the wonderful details of canon, the mysteries that connect the land and its people.

I also wrote one fic for each of these fests, which I'm sure you can identify as my work FROM SPAAAACE. But I need to go read more in both of them!

I answered the first ten questions of this meme here, and now I'm doing the second set of 10:

Ship Questions for your Current Fandom

11. Who is your current OTP?
I guess if my "current" fandom is technically Star Wars, then Han/Leia is my current OTP. *hands* And also Rey/Finn and Obi-Wan/Satine and Kanan/Hera.

12. Who is your current OT3?
Rey/Finn/Poe. Anakin/Padme/Obi-Wan (which is more...how could these relationships be better/more healthy than fervent shipping; but they do work better as a trio. IJS).

13. Any NoTPs?
Didn't I already answer this last time? Reylo for Star Wars, definitely.

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?
Han and Luke, I guess? Though I'm okay with Luke being there as part of the OT3 with Han and Leia. *hands*

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?
Obi-Wan/Satine. Obi-Wan/Ventress. Also, Anakin/Ahsoka. I would also love some Ahsoka/Steela if people would write it.

16. Are there any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?
Hux/Ren. Ugh. DO NOT WANT.

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?
HAN/LEIA. OTP OF OTPS.

18. What ship have you written the most about?
I haven't really written much ship fic in Star Wars.

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?
Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. I guess I can see why people ship them but I find them a huge yawn and have mostly been unable to sustain interest in reading fic about them where the romantic relationship is the focus. See also Finn/Poe, which doesn't interest me unless Rey is also present. I also just don't get any of the Obi-Wan/clones fic. I mean, knock yourselves out, but I don't get it.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?
Obi-Wan/Anakin. Which - I don't read most of the fic for it, because I don't see it a regular romance? But I have a hard time with them being separated (before Anakin turns evil, I mean) even if they are technically involved with other people.

Virtual Garage Sale

I know that most of you are probably getting sick of seeing me mention it, but I promise that this will be the last time that I post a link to my virtual garage sale post. That said, if any of you know someone who might potentially be interested in anything listed there, please feel free to pass along the link. I'd really appreciate it.

Also, if anyone knows someone who might be interested in a Roomba (which is listed on that post), please let me know. I'm very much willing to haggle on the price since it's used, but selling it would help me immensely since it's basically the only "big ticket" (so to speak) item that I have left to try selling.

I'm less than $200 away from having enough to cover all of the various bills that will come out of my checking account on November 1st, and from that point forward my finances should be in a much better state. I get three paychecks in November, which is ridiculously helpful all on its own, and I should be getting both a holiday bonus and a raise in December. Add in the tax refund that I should be getting at the beginning of 2018, and for the first time in ages I'm actually not completely panicking about the state of my life in general.

unexpected cat

I currently have a cat clawing gently at my rug and playing with a vitamin bottle. He showed up outside my window at 6:30 this morning, meowing urgently, and ran inside like a shot when I opened the door. I don't think he's just a curious outdoor cat, because I've tried to let him back out and he won't go, plus he's pretty distressed. And he's not feral, because he's clean and not starving--though I gave him some water and a little tuna and he gobbled up both--and because he clearly likes human attention.

No collar, and he's un-neutered, which doesn't speak well for his people.

But anyway, I'm biding my time until 9 am when the animal shelter opens, and hoping he doesn't have fleas that will get into the carpet. Also hoping that he doesn't spray and won't need to go potty. I've made him a box lined with torn paper but I don't know if he'll accept that as a temporary litterbox.

There's also a cardboard box he's going to have to go into so I can take him to the shelter. I put his plate of tuna inside but so far he won't go in. I might have to grab him with a towel.

And now he's resumed prowling around and meowing at me for help, help, help. Be patient, guy, and I'll take you to where your people can, hopefully, find you.

I have to watch episodes with several breaks, because TEH STOOPID bothers me.

I mean, there's the standard TV show stupid where characters have to tell each other things that they already know, so that we the audience can catch up on what happened since last season. Fine. Normal TV stupid.

There's the stupid of watching combat scenes - streets somehow devoid of cars except for those belonging to the villains; martial artists spinning into HTH despite facing their opponents and having a clear path between them (you don't turn your back on an enemy if you don't get something from it - sure, spinning around may get you leverage for an attack, but nobody did that); old Western-style one-shot-insta-death bullet wounds (except, of course, for any character with a name), and so on. TV violence stupid. Fine. Normal.

There's the interpersonal drama stupid, which includes both "let's talk about stuff that we would never directly say, except for the audience to catch up" and "let's make sure the audience has been informed, AGAIN, of exactly who has what relationship with whom." Bleh. Fine. Gotta throw in some backstory exposition for the new watchers. Then there's the mind games and secrets bullshit, where everyone pretends that they haven't spent five years learning that you need to rely on your teammates and that means telling them when something weird is going on. Fine. Emotionally constipated characters in order to stretch out the tension.

There's also spoilerific stupid, so I'm putting that behind a cut. )
