Ep begins with the irony of Jack, a Torchwood member who operates outside all laws, complaining about an illegal move. The show is amazingly consistent in being about what it is about.

Which makes one wonder--how long can they sustain it, and just where are they going with it?

The Jack/Ianto parallels were pretty consistant too - both of them hiding their feelings behind their outer masks, both of them having lost someone at Torchwood 1. There is no way Jack didn't go apeshit after reading the casualty reports and spotting Rose's name.

On a totally different note, I suspect that he nicked the Doctor's hand out of the rubble then. *grin*

The main difference is that Jack really is an ultimate moral arbiter (until his superiors, whoever they are, show up), while Ianto has Jack to answer to--after all, were Jack to do the same actions to save (say) Gwen it'd be presented as perfectly acceptable (cf. Nine's actions in "Dalek" re: Rose).
