As promised, I'm still reading Will Brooker's Alice's Adventures and working on my review of it. It promises to not be short.
Strangely semi-relatedly, I played croquet today fore the first time in years, possibly decades. I can see why it was chosen for the scene in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; the way we played it, it did end up seeming rather anarchic. Other games that were played included darts, air hockey, and bingo.
I also got comics today. Ultimate X-Men vol. 4 and Ultimate Spiderman vol. 16, both for the Ultimate Kitty content. It's a little in media res, but it's Kitty. In the Ultimate verse!
You know, the fact that the Ultimate verse is written as a heterosexual male fantasy on overdrive, with constant sexual objectification of all the female characters, wouldn't really bother me that much if they would just be honest and self-aware about it. I mean, I'm not going to complain too much about scantily-clad women appearing in panels. (Although I would have no problem with equal opportuniy scantily-cladness, either.) It's the fact that they treat it as if it's frakking normal that frustrates me. A little ironic touch would go a long, long way here. I mean, I want to perform an ironic reading of the Ultimate-verse, the way I do for Torchwood, but for some reason I just can't.
Anyway, I also finally picked up the trade for the Dark Phoenix Saga, as well as the third volume of New X-Men: Childhood's End. I have quite a bit of reading in front of me to do, but first I plan to finish the The 4400 disc that Netflix sent me so I can send it back. Then I need to bake, because I told my church I'd bring in the goodies tomorrow.
