Robot Recs
Dec. 26th, 2006 07:31 amThere are some really wonderful fics written for Asimov's robot universe, which I will henceforth call I, Robot (bookverse). This is not a disparagement of the other Robot fics, which I haven't read; I'm only really interested in those fics focused on Susan Calvin, and they were uniformly wonderful.
Hostage Negotiation. Perfectly keeping with the feel and theme of the original Robot novels, Dr. Calvin has a puzzle involving robots to solve--and as always, reason and logic win out over hysteria and emotion. Perfectly characterized Susan Calvin.
Or your money back. Drawing on the broader cast of characters at U.S. Robots than just Dr. Calvin, this story isn't as tight, but takes advantage of its sprawl by taking on a few more themes.
The Conscientious Objectors. The structure of the "Susan Calvin explores a puzzle about robot" story is used to great effect to take on issues about the responsibility of the individual in the face of situations seemingly beyond our control. A profile in cybernetic courage, so to speak.
