Open Office is biased against academics! It's refusing to recognize "problematize" as a word.

(Yes, I use that word a lot. It's because it's an incredibly useful concept.)

All the programs are! We used to have fun back in the 80s typing in swathes of DH Lawrence of Faulkner into the clunky grammar/style programs of the day and watching them go crazy trying to edit.

They're all based on Business English!

(I add LOTS to mah dictionaries!)

But who are the these Business English people to force their experience on me in this manor? To make a claim to represent me when they clearly don't even speak the same language? The horror! The oppression! Designing a piece of software I didn't pay for in such a way as to not perfectly meet my every need! The arrogance!

Um, I actually don't know this program, but I know that The Powers That Be have been against academics ever since Word Perfect which was perfect for footnotes disappeared into the gaping maw of Word.

If Open Office only billed itself as for business people, then that'd be okay. It's the claim it's for everybody that makes it clear it's part of some insidious anti-academic conspiracy.

I'm enough of a dork that as soon as I saw this entry I had to open MS Word to see if the same problem was to found there.

Sadly, Microsoft also does not believe that your "problematize" is a word.

Quick! We should write angry letters about this oppression!

Just... not in Word or OpenOffice...
