LJ is dead this weekend. What's up?

Thank you to whoever nominated The Hero With a Thousand Faces and Throught he Black She Shines to the Strawberries for "Best Character Vignette." Also thank you to whoever nominated School of Lost Souls as "Best Crossover," but it's flocked and so can't play with the other fanfic boys and girls.

"The Hero With a Thousand Faces" doesn't seem half so innovative now that Serenity has come out and everyone and their sister has compared Mal Reynolds to Han Solo. Just remember that you read it here first, folks.

UNICORN

You are a unicorn. A unicorn

is like a horse, but has a single magical

horn protruding from its forehead. Unicorns

are the ultimate symbol of purity and

innocence. A unicorn is the ultimate sign of

goodness. A classic unicorn is bright white

with a golden horn. Unicorns are playful

creatures and will never resort to violence.

So to kill a unicorn is a very shameful,

terrible thing to do indeed.

I've always wondered: if you cut off a unicorn's horn, is it still a unicorn?

Unicorns are tricky creatures. Since they don't actually exist, there is much less that can be definitively said about than there is that can be said about, say, rhinoceri (rhinocerouses?). Indeed, it seems that the only thing that all fantastic creatures that English-speakers would naively call "unicorns" have in common is that horn.

I don't think I put the explanation as to why "School of Lost Souls" is locked down to a single reason (and it partially includes real-life reasons as well), but the the ambivalent way dubcon is portrayed in it has a lot to do with it.

Yeah, I thought I recalled the legend being that removing a unicorn's horn killed it, but I'm not particular up on unicorn myth and of course because it is myth it's difficult to say anything definitive.
