According to Kwan Choi Wah's "The Right Word in Cantonese" (I know you said Mandarin, but maybe in 500 years the two will have merged):
Dark, black is "haak" (long a) and "dark color" is "samsik" (long a and long i)and Phoenix is fuhngwohng.
