Masochist, noun. A canon whore in X-Men movieverse fandom.

1. How old is Kitty Pryde? What does she look like? And why the frell is she an X-Man? (In the sense of being on the team, that is. I love Kitty, but there is absolutely no explanation given.)

2. Since we see Hank with non-blue skin in X2, the secondary stage of his mutation must have set in some time while Jean was dead, right? So his reaction to his response to Leach is one to being returned to a state he very recently held, right? Which raises the question, when did he become in charge of Mutant Affairs? I had the impression he was "closeted" during X2, but that might not be canon--we don't see him long enough to base many conclusions upon his scene (if you can call it that).

3. In X3, we have four distinct "times." If I remember correctly, they are: thirty years "ago", twenty years "ago", the not-too-distant "future", and the narrative "now" against which the other times are being measured ("our" past, "our" future). So Jean's age is her age in the flashback (early teens?) + twenty/thirty years (I forget which flashback was which) + the difference between "now" and the not-too distant future. Warren's age, same deal. Right?

I don't quite understand #1. Why would Kitty not be an X-man?

Also, honestly... X3 sucked ass, IMO. I just write it off and plead for Bryan Singer to come back. Though not for him to leave Superman... um... he can do both...

In X2, Bobby and Rogue want to be X-Men (in the sense of being on the team), but they're not allowed to; they need to wait by the plane. By X3, they are on the team, which I find somewhat plausible because they both really have proved their mettle, but so is this random girl who went screaming into the woods during X2. Why her and not, say, Jubilee? Or Syren, who was actually useful during the attack on the mansion?

Gotcha. I see what you mean now. I was mistaking it as referring back to the comics (in which Kitty was an X-Man, you know... a lot).

Okay, as for why she's an X-Man in the movie... well, she really wasn't. Not until the end there, when they really didn't have any other choice. She was training with them, but then, so were Bobby and Rogue. As for her screaming into the woods... well... um... kids get scared?

And it's possible that Kitty was put in because Zak Penn and... the other dude whose name I can't remember... thought she was a more interesting character than Jubilee or Syren. I mean, after all, they were using Joss's run on Astonishing as sides when they were casting her...

This is all me saying "I don't really know, but maybe this..."

At least the girl they cast was cute?

Bobby, Rogue, and Kitty have uniforms from the very beginning of the movie. And in X2, I think, it was made clear that uniform=X-Man. And I just can't buy the explanation that maybe all the students went through those simulations just like Bobby, Rogue, and Kitty did. (And if that were the case, why were Bobby, Rogue, and Kitty the only students involved in the climax?)

I'm not harping on Kitty because I dislike her; I think running into the woods is a perfectly normal and reasonable thing to do, and I like her better than Jubilee or Syren, and I'll agree that Ellen Page is cute (but is that really so rare?). I just think her inexplicable placement on the team doesn't make any sense for anything other than meta/Doylist reasons, which is a huge pain when I am trying to play "How many children had Lady Macbeth?"

That's entirely fair. I was just, you know... trying to come up with something.

In response to your other point, yes, X3 sucked. But I think that's part of the reason why I suddenly find myself interested in writing fic in response to it, and my canon whoredom is giving me headaches. (The other part is that while I could care less about Scott/Jean/Logan or Pyro/Rogue/Bobby, I'm interested in Rogue/Bobby/Kitty, especially since I think X3 pretty much doomed Bobby/Rogue, which used to be my OTP.)

I totally get the 'it sucked so now I want to write' bit. It's why there are some fandoms I don't really get into... because I pretty much don't feel the creators have done bad things with it. Unlike, for instance, BtVS, where I fell in love with the characters, and then, you know... the writing started to get lazy.

(And dude, you should check out Peter Parker/Kitty in Ultimate Spiderman... it rules)

And really, Singer was marginally better, but the continuity between X1 and X2 is still pretty shoddy. Kitty gets younger, wtf? (I originally wanted to write a time-travel fic to fanwank it, but now three Kitty Prydes is more than even I can reconcile.)

I thought Bryan Singer was a lot better. Not necessarily from the standpoint of sticking to canon, and I can't say that there's nothing I dislike about his X-men movies (his treatment of Cyclops, for instance... though at least *he* didn't kill Scott off screen).

However, I think Singer did a much, *much* better job of sticking to the spirit of the comics, as opposed to the letter of them. X3, I feel, did neither.

I'm sorry, but when you have Jean's main emotional attachment being Logan... that... it just... no. That's all. Just no.

Just to make sure I've been clear, I don't care if anyone sticks to the letter of the comics; Singer's use of Rogue as an audience-insert worked beautifully, for example. I just want them to be consistent from movie to movie, you know. I can understand the need to recast sometimes, but even Singer seemed to be operating under the assumption that we weren't really paying attention to the little details and wouldn't feel disoriented when they were randomly changed . . . which is really contrary to the way I interact fannishly with a text, with a lot of focus on minor characters and little canon details (like Buffy's hair color in the "Killed by Death" flashback or the beach in "Go Fish").

flashback 1 (Jean) = 20 years ago

flashback 2 (Warren) = 10 years ago

you can deal with the time relative to today (and between the three movies) however you want, IMO.

I knew I would be able to rely on you to set me straight.

I just found the jump from "10 years ago" to "The not-too-distant future" incredibly disorienting because it almost seemed like they wanted to mean that the flashbacks were 20 and 10 years respectively in the X-Men's past (so that Jean would be in her mid-thirties, and Warren in his mid-twenties), but that's not what they were saying at all. It just seemed weird to have an "ago" and a "future" without an explicitly defined "now."
