While not all of these artists are representative of the music which I typically listen, I think this grouping is fairly representative of the diversity and character of my playlist.

12. Elmo

Yeah, those were the only ones that I recognized.

I am disturbed by (a) the existence of songs by Sesame Street characters and (b) its presence on people's playlists.

Really? Both the muppets and the Sesame Street characters (now they are no longer the same family) do a lot of singing, and usually they have very good taste.

As I was writing the comment I had vague recollections of singing during Sesame Street (clearly the show was not formative for me). And Kermit I would validate. But Grover and Elmo? I think even as a kid I preferred the less childish (childlike?) of the Sesame Street characters. I loved Grover in The Monster at the End of the Book but have no real memories of him or Elmo from the show (and Elmo is forever ruined now by the hateful Tickle-Me-Elmo and the sickening cutesy quotient of doom).

The Monster at the End of This Book is an awesome, awesome story. Yes.

I'm going to add "It's Not Easy Being Green" to the list of songs-stuck-in-my-head as a result of this post. (We had it on LP when I was little and I listened to it a lot, but I didn't realize it was sung by Kermit, so it didn't make an awful lot of sex sense since I couldn't see why anyone would be green.

But then I had the same problems with X the Owl singing about being blue on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as I didn't have a color teevee and didn't realize X actually was blue.

And other tales from Ari's culturally illiterate childhood.

It may just be the fact that it's 1:30 in the morning, but I find those childhood stories utterly fascinating.

Who is not awed by the awesomeness of the Monster at the End of this Book?

Um, my reply to this got rewritten before posting and clearly I didn't go back to check for coherency before posting. It should read:

Yes, but clearly Mr. Rogers resonated with you far more than it did with me, so you're one up on me there.

Plus of course the argument that there are lots of cultural touchstones besides television. Hello, Milne, Dahl, etc.

Really you just *had* a televisually limited childhood.

(It's time for me to go to bed, huh?)

Given the choice, Grover and Elmo would not be the Muppets/Sesameans I would choose to be representatives of the insane amount of Muppet music I have on my hardddrive. But it was their songs kept coming up along with The Muppet Christmas Carol ensemble pieces which I wasn't sure how to credit visually.

I loved Grover as a child, especially SuperGrover, but I think there may have been will-to-power issues going on there. I too have no memories of Elmo. But overall, I prefer the Muppets to the Sesameans, except when the Sesameans are doing parodies of classic rock songs, as in "Born to Add" or "Letter B." Then they, well, rock.

(I kept reading that as "Seamans" and was very confused.)

The Muppet Christmas Carol has songs? Well I suppose it would. (Yeah, I've probably never seen any of the Muppet movies.)

I remember SuperGrover now that you mention it. Sesame Street stuff I remember off the top of my head are: Big Bird, Snuffleupagus, Oscar the Grouch, Slimey the worm, Teeny Little Super Guy, and learning Spanish.

The Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my favorite movies. Definitely in my personal top twenty. And I love the songs sooo much.

All right, as if I needed to tell you that.

"Are You Beautiful Because I Love You" is a good song to have stuck in one's head. I fell in love with the song (hee!) the first time I heard it, it so perfectly summed up how I felt about love and beauty and desire and wonderfulness.

Yep, all right. I actually searched through Google for that picture of Avril because she's wearing the geek glasses.

Is 6. the third Doctor, John Pertwee? Because if he isn't, I'm leaning toward Burt Bacharach.

Not the Doctor, although he does have to do with SF. And not Burt Bacharach.
