They're from two book fandoms, a comics fandom, a TV fandom, a theatre fandom, and a movie fandom, although I can think of at least one pairing which arguably fits into more than one of those categories. Dec. 25th, 2008 09:00 amConsider a Box, T, intersecting a Circle, O Heinlein's World-as-Myth multiverse. I don't want to spoil the crossover if you can't figure it out from the title--although I will say I positively squeed when I realized who Lib was talking to--but even before the crossover happens this is a wonderful piece, with a great use of the canonical voices and characters, the fun self-indulgence of Heinlein's later work, biting satire, and delicious meta. It helps that the author grounds it in the Cambridge, Mass. of our world or a close analogue--it's the little details that really make the story.
Cartograpy, A Little Princess. A missing scene from Ram Dass's POV which does many things--fills in backstory, provides insight into the perspective of a minor character (and a character of color) from the story, and evokes a wonderfully appropriate mood--but does everything naturally and organically.
Silver Bells and Cockle Shells, The Secret Garden. Mary/Dickon. Some beautiful imagery: Her Garden. Dickon. They are linked for Mary, just like the secret room and Colin, the nursery and Martha, long strands of pearls and her mother's fading face. Mary is associative by nature; she remembers in pairs, in groups, and Dickon cannot be separated by her dotted landscapes, cannot be removed from crocus bulbs and the smell of freshly turned earth.
If Only for Today, Ultimate Spider-Man. Jessica and Peter spend Christmas together. Remember how I've been wanting a fic like this ever since I read Ultimate Clone Saga? Nice supporting roles from May, MJ, and clone!Gwen too.
I'll take it, it'll do, Arcadia. Preserving the Thomasina/Septimus OTP is really all that's needed for me to fall in love with an Arcadia fic, but this has a premise I haven't seen before which lets the author go to new places with the characters. And now I'm envisioning a Thomasina played by Amanda Seyfried, and there's no bad there.
Warmth out of the Cold, Matilda, Matilda/Miss Honey. Brief but sweet.
just one look and now you'll be seeing double, High School Musical RPF. Zac E./Vanessa H./Ashley T. I've never seen HSM, and I only have the vaguest notion of who these people are (I gave last initials because I'm not positive what their last names are); if you gave a photo of all three of them I think I could tell you which is which, because if I'm not mistaken one is a blonde, one is a brunette, and one is a boy. But young love and a m/f/f threesome is never bad.
Sapphism is Catching, The Importance of Being Earnest. A very brief treat, but the prose is perfect for the fandom.

Jan. 1st, 2008 02:45 pmThe Yuletide reveal has happened, so I can say that I wrote The Hurricane as my main assignment. It's for The 4400, which is on record as being one of my fandoms (has a tag and everything) and of course has Summer Glau as recurring character Tess Doerner as part of major OTP Kevin/Tess. My assignment listed "Any" as to characters, so I wrote Kevin and Tess and Maia, another one of my favorite characters. It's Maia-centric, focusing on one possible response she might have to her precognitive abilities. Also, it quotes Wittgenstein and the Roddenberry version of the Drake equation without attribution, as formulae in Kevin's journal.
Yuletide treats included Proof, a short exchange between Thomasina and Septimus from Stoppard's play Arcadia. It's mostly dialogue, perhaps because I wrote it immediately after rereading the play, and is mostly about grammar and logic. OMG, OTP.
Also I wrote The State of Nature, which is the Pam/Nikki Bourne Identity fic I said I wanted to have immediately after seeing Ultimatum. This is mostly born from the question of what Pam does after that movie; my answer is the university lecture circuit. A twenty-first century expansion on the movie's worldbuilding. (Although there's a moment with Princess Jasmine and the hookah from Alice that reads racially iffy to me.)
Further Notes on Botanical Discoveries, Arcadia. Play structure, with three scenes, one with Hannah, Chloe, and Valentine, the other with Thomasina and Septimus (OTP!), then back to the present day again only to converge, like in the play. Contains the line "Continental philosophy is its own very special brand of teenage rebellion."
How to Change the World Without Even Trying, Terminator, between the first and second movies. Exactly what I imagine it was like for John to be on his own.
the end of the world as we know it, Terminator, after the third movie.
Seven Layer Confusion Cake, She's the Man. This is the fic I desperately wanted after seeing the movie. Okay, to be honest, I want Olivia/Viola/Sebastian but even without added twincest Olivia/Viola is something to be loved.
Kiss the Girl, She's the Man. Short, a Yuletide Treat, but there's no such thing as too much Olivia/Viola.
Summer Sang in Me, Twelfth Night. Missing scene while Viola was still pretending to be Cesario.
Why Sex Ed Should Stay in Schools, Sesame Street. "The lab said that boys and girls need to know what happens to their bodies when they get older, and since they can't talk about it in the schools, we Muppets are going to step in and help out."
Yuletide Recs, fandoms 4-B
Dec. 25th, 2006 09:04 amNeutral Parties, The 4400, Diana & Maia & Nina. Maia and Nina are two of my favorite 4400 characters (not counting Summer's character Tess, of course): Maia the pre-teen with superpowers (she can see the future) and Nina the tough-as-steel superior officer. Here their degree of control over their lives is contrasted nicely with Diana's sensations of being overwhelmed, as the NTAC agent goes about a day in her life, taking her adopted daughter to a birthday party. Firm grasp of the characters and of the more realistic feel of the show.
The Bridal Path, The Addams Family (movieverse), Wednesday/Joel. Wednesday. Wednesday. This captures her, and the feel of the series, perfectly--comedic and dark and will-to-powery all at the same time--and it's Wednesday Addams.
The Longed-For Moment, The History Boys, Dakin/Posner. The author replicates the genius of Bennet's dialogue and the feel of the play without a wrong note, e.g. "I was lying there, and all I could think was I may be a Jew, I may be small, I may be homosexual, and no one from my supervisor to my bedder will let me forget I'm from Sheffield. But at least I'm about to get fucked." This fic is as much fun to read as the play was to watch, and no less intelligent either.
All that is overdue, Arcadia, Hannah & Septimus. I love Thomasina (it didn't hurt that the freshman who played her in the British Drama presentation at Colgate was really hot), and this is a fitting memorial--Septimus and Hannah in the library, divided by time but having something in common nonetheless. Sparse but beautiful prose.

X. The novels of Robert A. Heinlein (so I can request Lapuz Lazuli Long/Lorelai Lee Long twincest, probably, although there's plenty of other interesting pairings, as the multiverse is so rich).
X. The Parent Trap (1999), Hallie Parker/Annie James twincest. (And, hee!)
[ETA: The really sad thing is that, in my head, Laz and Lor are played by Lindsay Lohan.]
I don't really know howyuletide requests work. How specific a prompt does one provide? It couldn't be too specific, obviously, since just matching up fandoms is so much of a chore that they need to make computers do it. . . .
So, what else? (I'm assuming the fandom in my icon doesn't count as "rare," or else I'd try to get some more Rosalind/Celia. Which is definitely being put in my LJ interests, stat.)
